This course explores Canada’s criminal law utilizing case law and linking issues raised in cases with their broader social implications. Topics may include actus reus and mens rea elements of criminal offences, causation, mental illness and law, strict and absolute liability, participation in crimes, inchoate offences, and various defences in law. Students will be introduced to the leading precedents in criminal law, learn how to read and understand decisions, and understand the significance of cases for Canadian society. Prerequisite: Senior Student status.
